1. You greatly reduce the risk of running up the back of someone
2. It is much more relaxing. If the car in front brakes, there is no hurry for you to do anything.
3. It improves traffic flow in the event of a "left lane ends" or "right lane must turn right". Or even just some clown who changes lanes a lot and would otherwise cut you off.
4. You don't have to switch your foot between pedals as often (ie. better fuel consumption and reduced ankle RSI)
5. Reduces the risk of someone running up the back of you - my driving school would refer to this as the safety cushion concept
6. If someone is tailgating you, they will either overtake or give up.
7. It really doesn't take any longer. You are still traveling at the speed of everyone else, just with a bigger gap.
8. When looking for street signs, you have an unobstructed view for longer, and more time to react once you see what you're looking for.
9. Reduced slamming on of brakes means your dog doesn't throttle itself on its car harness when it insists on standing on the back seat with its head between the front seats.
10. You don't need to concentrate as much. You can make lists, ponder the meaning of life or do some of the things I mentioned earlier in "Some things I enjoy doing".
* At least 4 seconds, even more if you feel like it.
