Hello hello,
Week two at the Greatest Hospital in the World has begun. I'm not sure why it's called that but my tutor said she'll tell us this week at our regular Small Provincial Hospital day (Thursday). How exciting.
This afternoon I went searching for patients and found a couple who were bored out of their minds and happy to talk to medical students. This was a bit strange as usually the patients at the Greatest Hospital in the World are rather fed up as there are thousands of medical, nursing, physio and assorted other health profession students all eager to find victims. In the Small Provincial Hospital we do have less patients overall (and sure, there was only one person in the place with anaemia last week), but they're generally "fresher" as there are not so many students out to suck their blood and ask stupid questions. But anyway, had some lovely chats and learnt some interesting things.
I plan on visiting NICU (neonatal intensive care unit) and paediatrics at some point. I'm told that it's much easier to feel livers and spleens in kids. And neonates are excellent for seeing what scleral icterus (yellowed whites of eyes due to jaundice) looks like. Hopefully there will be some non-dragony people holding the fort who will let me do a little bit of gentle prodding...
