So I would like a pet. Ideally I would like a dog. But I felt fairly sure that the parents would not want a dog. And then there was the possibility of moving out which confounded things further.
Then a friend was telling me about her budgie. And I thought that a budgie could work. Portable, doesn't need walking... etc... not quite a dog but possibly a good compromise.
However when I raised the topic with the parents, it appears that it would be ok to get a dog. So that's exciting. Will need to get gates on either side of the house to make the backyard secure. Interestingly, when we were little it was the father who provided opposition to the dog-idea. However I think that he has been softened up by the absolutely beautiful and endearingly stupid golden retriever that lived next door for 5 years, because when I said that I'd rather have a dog but that a budgie would be more acceptable he said that I could get a dog. He asked what sort I wanted and was pleased when I said a) not a small yappy one and b) one that can beat up the idiot dog next door. Which would not be hard because the idiot dog next door is extremely overweight and stupid in a non-endearing way... for instance it is an excellent guard dog when I am trying to EXIT MY HOUSE.
So have been browsing the RSPCA and dog rescue sites this morning, and will go looking around pounds in the next few weeks. I don't have a particular breed in mind, however there are a few general types I don't think would work too well - eg. dogs that need truckloads of exercise, angry dogs...
All very exciting. Extracting info from med student friend who did vet science in a former life :D
