So it's cold and wet again. Yes yes, the stereotype is the the English always talk about the weather. Which may indeed be true, however Australians talk about the weather whenever it is not 20-25 degrees and sunny. I know this because I have worked in retail. I struggle with small talk at the best of times, but weather comments from random strangers are quite tiring.
"Nice and cool in here!" (Yes. Well it is when we keep hot air production to a minimum)
"Good to see the rain! Hope it's landing where we need it" (Yes...)
"Bet you're glad to be working today - nice and cool here" (Erm well I'd rather be at home actually, but sure, whatever!)
"Raining cats and dogs out there!" (Really? That's odd - I can see the street and I could swear it was sunny and fine!)
"Oh it's so nice here - I'll just sit on this chair all day" (Please don't)
"Too bad the rain isn't falling in the catchment" (Isn't it? Have I told you about my plans to drain the harbour and put the catchment there... it may unfortunately involve flooding your house... that ok?)
"Nice weather for ducks!" (I am not a duck. You are not either, unless my eyes deceive me)
"I hate the heat!" (Surely there are things more worthy of your hatred - eg. corruption, evil, workplace relations laws, television ads for feminine hygiene products)
"I hate the cold!" (Interesting you should say that, as there is no such thing as "cold", it merely being the absence (or, as I suspect in this case, the RELATIVE absence) of heat. Hating something that doesn't exist is a bit of a waste of time really)
"Oh it's cloudy! I need a nice sunny day for my birthday party!" (Care factor? Fairly low...)
"I know the rain is good, but I wish it wouldn't rain today - I have to go to the hardware" (And?)
I was going to go out tonight. But it's really not nice driving weather and I'm very tired and cold and it's all too hard.
My brother suggested I stay home and have raisin toast and hot chocolate instead. Seemed like a good idea.
