So yesterday was our first vet encounter with Pooka. I'd been keeping an eye on her stitches since she got home and they were starting to ooze a little bit and she was licking them a lot and didn't seem to mind the taste of Betadine. So we went up to the vet to get a lampshade for her head and to see how she handled it because next week she's going there to have her stitches out.
She wasn't keen to go in the door of the surgery, however I bribed her in with some treats. Once inside, a nasty little yappy dog kept lunging at her and its owner kept saying "Sit! Sit!" in vain. I was very pleased when I told Pooka to sit and she did. Hurrah! She won! Then the nice nurse lady came and told her how good she was and gave her treats and fitted her lampshade, and said that the vet would have a quick look at the wound before we left.
When it was time to go into the examination room, Pooka did an amazing impression of a floppy toddler (that move where they appear to suppress all muscle tone and it's a bit like trying to hold a half-set jelly in your hand), however I picked her up and stuck her on the table and all went well. Then she did the flop move again when I took her off the table, and when the vet said that she would weigh her (scales are in the waiting room), Pooka ran out and jumped onto the scales without being told. Total coincidence, but I think she's smart!
So the vet reckons that she has to be kept still and quiet until she gets the stitches out - no throwing balls or walks. However she had no suggestions on how to suppress a 7 month old mix of two active breeds. So we are quietly ignoring that advice because we'd prefer that she didn't trash the house or go mad in the next week. And she is now not able to lick her wound and has some antibiotics so I think she'll be fine. My nickname for her when I give her her breakfast is Captain Insano. And during the 24 hours we tried to abide by the "still and quiet" rule, she put on her Captain Insano persona about 5-6 times.
Then today's adventure was going to pick up the mother from work. I kept her on a very short lead in the pharmacy! But there were no disasters.
