For the last couple of months I have found work quite hard because there has been no-one to delegate anything to. The last few weeks have been even worse as the new people can do considerably less things than my old boss and hence my responsibilities have increased a lot. However, today my new assistant started! And conveniently, she has the same name as my old assistant. No need to change any of the time sheets or labels on things or change my habits. It was very nice to dispense a script, talk to the patient about it then hand it over to the assistant to do the money bit.
Despite this exciting new development, there will always be the frequent (I was going to say occasional but... er read on) nutcases who seem to head straight for me. Today I was accosted by one lady because we don't carry her favourite brand of ear plugs. I looked them up in our wholesaler book and they are not there. I can't order them for her. She asked why we used to have them and don't anymore. I explained that this is because we buy that sort of thing from reps and it just depends which rep comes in when we run out of ear plugs. So can't we call the rep and tell them to come? Well no. Partly because I have absolutely no idea which rep sold us the ear plugs and partly because we have way more ear plugs than we are likely to go through in a year. Well it can't be that hard to find the rep - just call the manufacturer. Erm... these reps aren't employed by the manufacturer. And even if they were, the hours of telephone time it would take are POSSIBLY not justified by a 50 cent pair of ear plugs (ok, I exaggerate, they may be $1).
Yes. This morning as a morning of nutcases. At one point I noted that the last 4 customers had all been mad to some degree. However it is certainly more interesting than my previous job (in a rather more upmarket part of Sydney). The other day I ran into one of my customers while I was on a lunch break. She was complaining about my new bosses - "That new bloke, he's f***ing USELESS!!". What can I say to that but agree?
