During the Sydney Olympics, my brother and I realised that we indeed have the Olympic spirt. We created a special olympic dessert using two shades of jelly (green and gold of course), tinned pineapple and those mini marshmallows. It was a triumph.
This evening the magic returned. We hosted our first ever Olympic Spirit Risk Gathering. I must say that it was a roaring success. The agenda for the night was as follows:
7pm - guests arrive. In this case, my friend and my brother's girlfriend. We watch a few rounds of beach volleyball, a bit of rowing and some swimming as a warm up exercise. Oh we now have digital tv (it was the only way to get good reception for channel 7) which means we can go to a special channel that has this frame at the side with Olympic trivia, various results of things and a scrolling news thing. VERY exciting.
7:30 - food is arranged. M&Ms, rice crackers, salsa, Jatz and french onion dip. A diverse selection, representing the diversity of the Olympics.
8:00 - the shrink wrap is removed from Risk. We spend a while removing all the little plastic bits from the frames. Can be painful. Especially the cannons. They just don't seem to want to come out.
8:15 - Risk commences (with gymnastics on in the background).
9:30 - I entrust my horsies and little men and cannons to my brother while I prepare the Olympic Spirit dessert. My brother had made a 3D model of what it was to look like - once this had been approved I gave the plans to my father so that he could buy the components when he did the shopping this morning. It consisted of a cheesecake, with wafers stuck around the edge, representing the stadium. In the middle of the stadium were the olympic rings (these were made of jelly rings - you know the type with sugar on them). I arranged jelly babies around the olympic rings in their colour groups to represent the athletes. Unfortunately I was unable to locate the Olympic torch (a candle that plays happy birthday) - I later found out that it is kept in the laundry. However I will know for next time. I did take some photos and a bit of video footage if anyone is interested :D
12:15 - the parents arrive home from a trivia night where my mother had smuggled in some er reference material from the Olympic supplement of the paper. It came in very handy but they still didn't win. Luckily there was enough Olympic Spirit Dessert left to console them. They settled in to watch the end of Risk.
12:30 - we finish Risk. I must say that I made an amazing comeback at one point. I had lost everything except Scandinavia. However by the end of the game I had most of North America and large portions of Europe and possibly a bit of Africa. My friend won. This was not planned for. She said she had joined the Mediterranean Alliance (which was everyone except my brother) however at the last minute she turned evil and took over Scandinavia thus fulfilling her mission of occupying 24 countries. Gah. She was not a foundation member of the MA however I was still somewhat hurt by her betrayal. Ah well, will know not to trust her next time.
12:35 - the guests depart. The rest of us head to bed.
