This holiday season we are tring to both cut back on expenses and also give our friends and family gifts that are meaningful to them. We cut back on giving bottles of wine and boxes of candy since these types of gifts seem pretty generic. I'm sure people like them but it doesn't take much thought to go out and buy lots of chocolates as it does to buy something tailored to someone's interests or hobbies.
For one of our neighbors we decided to make a gift basket. The wife really enjoys cooking so we made a basket for an Italian dinner with a cookbook, pasta, sauce and assorted Italian goodies. For other people we have been buying them calendars based on their favorite hobbies. We have a family member who is into archeology, so believe it or not we found a calender of cave drawings. I bet they don't get two of those. For our friends we do not know as well, we are getting gifts such as inspirational calendars.
