Merry/Happy Christmas

Once a British editor who was working on a international publication asked me if we said, "Happy Christmas" to each other in Australia. I had to say no, we don't. We say "Merry Christmas." Happy Birthday, Happy New Year and Merry Christmas.
Reading everyone's Christmas blogs, I've noticed lots of UK Happy Christmas'. I've never imagined or heard the difference before, even though I'd been told about it.

We have never said "Happy Holidays," although cards or street signs may say "season's greetings."
I've discovered that a holiday as we have here, is called a vacation in the US. A holiday in the US is a celebration or religious festival, or a remembrance day. So "Happy Holidays" means something a little different to what I thought it meant.

So there you go. My little interesting discoveries for the week.
