Holy Saturday

Church again tonight. At first I thought it was a lot of church for one week. But after a while, it seemed very appropriate to be at church a lot. It heightens a sense of significance of the week. Jesus' followers would be in deep mourning today, inbetween Jesus death and ressurrection.

Another really moving service. Not quite as moving as Good Friday's, which had a few people in tears, the pouring down your face kind. Mostly it's all bible readings and retelling the Easter story. It's so vivid. On Good Friday a cross is carried around the church. Today it was draped in black, and flowers surrounded a picture of Jesus lying in the tomb. The congregation and choir gathered around it. The room was dark, except for the light of each person's candles. Rose petals were scattered on the tomb, and rose oil was sprinkled (read flicked) on the congregation. It is so cool to have rose water unexpectedly fall out of the sky and land on you in big drops. It smelt so good. It was like a blessing from heaven. Then we paraded in a funeral march singing "Holy God, Holy Immortal, Holy Mighty, have mercy on us."

It's so cool, and vivid and emotional, and involves all the senses, and alternative really.
