Heaven

I've been through the desert on a horse with no name, and it did feel very good to be out of the rain. I'm tanned and refreshed after spending three months with no responsibilities other than eating, sleeping and sometimes, washing. I've met a bunch of really nice people. Seen some great places. Fantastic. Everything out there is so beautiful, bright blue sky, deep orange earth, and the beautiful greeny brown of the spinifex. It's so vast, and there's so few people out there. It's great. Half way through the desert I did wonder why all this beauty was not inspiring me to be in awe of God or bringing me closer to him, or some other God and me moment. Months later, sitting on the edge of Australia, tent behind me on the sand, I sat in my bathers, sunglasses on, soaking up the sun as I stared out at nearby islands, the sand littered with shells, water lapping. I watched kids laughing in the waves and jump for joy as they caught a fish. I thought, "there is no where on earth better than this." And then the God moment came. "Heaven is better than this." That's it. My God moment. After weeks of trekking through the bush, a huge, joy-filled, reassuring moment full of simplicity and greatness. God is great.
