Great proverbs are of course an invaluable source of guidance and wisdom to help us on our path across the raging torrents of life.

If for example you find yourself in a hot kitchen, with lots of other cooks trying to help you make a simple meal, you can reflect with reassurance that many hands make light work.

Unfortunately there has been a dearth of new proverbs in recent years, so we are left relying on lots of old ones that may now be out of date. These days for example, is it not electricity that makes light work? And how long will that last?

So a short series, or partwork if you read the Daily Mail (it's all right, I won't tell), of new proverbs to bring greater wisdom to our troubled times.

I would take it mighty kindly, if you like them, if you would do what you can to introduce them into general circulation.

1. If you iron underpants, you probably ought to sit down and have a good think about your life.
