Weather

Owing to a complete dearth of ideas for my monthly women's magazine column, I have found myself this morning doing something very British: talking about the weather. Given that the column is supposed to be sort of Christian, I therefore found myself evolving a theory about weather and hermeneutics. I suggested that we have to read Jesus' life and words in the context of a hot country where water is scarce, and people are excitable and Mediterranean. If we read it as though it were written in rainy Britain, we risk taking far too literally, what are meant to be metaphorical and hyperbolic statements by a Middle Eastern Jew. Or, not knowing any other way to take them, we fail to take them at all.

Perhaps I have started a whole new academic discipline: meteorotheology, perhaps, or doctrinaclimatism.

PS I think that really ought to be climadoxy.
