Getting the word 'virile' in my game of Word Twist (on Facebook of course) has reminded me of the strange way Americans pronounce certain words. For instance 'virile' in US English rhymes with 'Cyril' and 'squirrel', while 'fertile' rhymes with 'Myrtle' and 'turtle'. Whole new opportunities for verse arise... Whenever I hear that a rogue state has 'missiles' pronounced the US way, I find myself thinking that strategic Catholic prayer books won't do us a lot of harm..
