'but it won't work in a cash point machine'

One of our admin staff went round the office issuing some flexible plastic friends on Monday. I asked if it was part of a new easy access salary system, but was told that it won't work in a cashpoint machine. Either does it pay for my shopping, get me points at Tesco's or even identify who I am. I ask you, what use is a plastic card if it won't any of those things?

I spent ages pondering the purpose of the card...

Then I recieved a helpful e-mail:
Following a number of queries, please follow the instructions below when entering the building:

Hold the card over the words "USER CARD" so that the arrows & magnetic strip are nearest to the door
Swipe the card in the direction of the arrows through the sliver card reader (fitted to the door frame - left hand side)
Swipe the card at approx 8"/second - too slow or too fast & the reader will not read the card

Suddenly it all makes sense; they've just fitted a new door entry system at work and the very descriptive instructions obviously indicate that they are keen to ensure that we all, irrepective of our intelligence, get to work safety.

Allowing us to leave is, of course, another matter. Choose option (a) is you want to hear about the complications of exiting the building!
