Ladies who lunch...

I spent the weekend visiting my barking-mad mother-in-law, when I got back last night I headed over to a friend's house (who, I should mention, does not have a red carpet) for a bit of sanity.

Sanity, I've discovered is relative.

I arrived just as dinner was being served- Jenny's husband was out so I had the joy of feeding tomato and carrot goo to her 6 month old little girl, Ailsa, while Jenny ate in relative peace fending off the complaints of her 2 year old son, Calum... it appears that there's not enough red pasta in a bag of coloured pasta twirls to satisfy him. I know how he feels... why is there always twice as many green ones?

Anyway, the tomato and carrot goo seemed to be a popular food and Ailsa was keen that I share in the smearing of it around face, hands, arms, eyes, etc. She explained to me that the trick is to follow the spoon into your mouth with a fist before swallowing, this way you get to share the food with anyone who's within arms reach. It got halfway up my arm before Jenny relieved me for her own yogurt smearing excercise. I was see that it wasn't just my own unpracticed technique that led to ginger eyebrows.

Calum was never so messy when I fed him at that age... he's a tidy little boy. Of course, having watched me feed Ailsa he decided that I ought to feed him too so handed me his spoon and waited until I obliged. Thankfully he got bored after three spoonfuls and went back to feeding himself.

Jenny expressed an interested in joining our small group of 'ladies who lunch' for, believe it or not, meet for lunch each week (as you may have read in Lemly or Soo's wiblog). If they do join us it'll make Ailsa our youngest 'lady' and Calum an honourary girl... I wonder if this will bother him in later life, or whether if we go somewhere where they serve red pasta he'll be happy with his lot in life? We'll have to wait and see.
