Useful objects I have known...

Front doors are very useful objects when they work. Ours doesn't and, therefore, isn't.

When we moved in the blue paint was being to peel off and the wood looked rather cracked. But I like traditional wooden doors, so it stayed. Or rather, I did like wooden doors. The problem is that we live in Swansea and very occasionally it rains. Rain kept seeping into the cracks making the wood swell. This winter the door won't shut, unless you slam it very hard. I'm not very good at slamming doors, neither are my female housemates, but my husband is... or rather, he was.

Wednesday morning he slammed the door very hard when he went out, and it started raining. Unfortunately it wasn't wet rain, it was sharp rain. The sort of painful flesh cutting shard-like rain that happens when you mange to smash the sky-light above a door. Which is what he did. And he still didn't mange to shut the front door.

I spent the morning sweeping up glass and phoning round companies for quotes. We're getting a new front door. A friendly plastic one that won't swell and won't require slamming and won't make it rain again!
