Happy St George's Day...

The Irish have St Patrick and celebrate with Guiness, The Welsh have St David and celebrate with daffodils and dancing, and we have St George and a dragon... and generally ignore the day.

When I was a child living in the 'shires I never noticed the 23rd April... it was just another day. Now, here I am living in Wales, and everywhere I look I am reminded that today I am English (the rest of the time I pretend to be Welsh!).

My wall calendar at work tells me it's St George's day.

I go to google.co.uk to search for something and notice a knight killing a dragon... was he always there, I wonder, if so why have I never noticed him before?

And, to top it all, I have been asked to ring bells (my very English hobby) for a Scout Service in town this evening... a St George's Day Service in Wales- can this be right?

Maybe it's time to be proud of some possibly fictional bloke who may of been born of noble birth in Cappadocia, and is said to have rescued some princess from a dragon that was terrorising some pagan town in Libya and basically has nothing to do with my English roots?

Or maybe not?!
