Baby, like his brother and sister, is now officially late in arriving. And I am fending off the usual stupid comments and questions: "Still here then?", etc. Friends I can punch (gently). Old ladies at church get sweet smiles (followed by swearing behind their backs). But what to do about my Son?
Son's conversation keeps randomly returning to the whereabouts of "his" baby.
The other morning he came into our room, looked in the still-empty moses basket and asked where the baby was. I sadly explained that he was still in mummy's tummy. After contemplating my response for a bit then he told me "when baby pops out of your tummy he might cry a bit". I had to agree with the crying bit, although I'm not sure "popping out" bit!
This morning Son, having checked the moses basket again (it's where he found his sister the morning after she was born as the planned home birth happened while he slept!), looked at me and very seriously told me that his baby was very comfy and didn't want to come out of my tummy. I think the more likely explanation is that Baby is scared to come out because of the thumps he's been receiving recently - Son likes to punch my stomach and then laugh while saying "I'm sorry, my baby brother"... what about saying sorry to mummy?!!
Son also keeps getting a little muddled by the whole baby in tummy thing. His understanding is pretty good for a not-quite-three-year-old, but we've had a few funny ideas popping out of his head.
Over tea he was asking whose tummy he'd been in. Answer: mummy's. So then he announced that when he was in my tummy he liked his brother... as if at one point they hung out in there together playing!
I love my son's imagination.
