we are sorry for the delay in service...

Tuesday I returned to the world of work. My little sprout is now 3 months old, and for various reasons I needed to return to the office. I've negotiated a three day week so will avoid that sinking 'monday morning' feeling, and get that wonderful 'friday feeling' a whole day early (like today, in fact).

Being back is strange. In my absence I've been deleted from the computer system, my desk has been stolen, the plants I left in the care of a collegue have almost died, and a few faces have changed... but generally the office is as I left it. After finding a temporary desk and having a chat with my manager about projects he wants me to work on, I set about getting my computer up and running. It wouldn't. Anyone would have thought that I had requested the computer to physically grow legs and start moving. Firstly I have to get it to recognise my new login & e-mal account... which would have been good if I'd know what the IT guys had set my password to. Helpfully they'd let my know my new passwork by e-mailling my new account... which I could only access if I knew my password. Talk about chickens and eggs. Once I'd negotiated that hurdle I tried to open some of the software that is supossedly on my computer. It's not. To sort that out I need to fill in a form, send it off to the helpful IT guys and wait a week or two. OK, some delays may be experienced, but there's always work that can be done if you have access to the network. Which I don't. Once again the IT guys have failed to add me to the required access permission list. Believe it or not, this requires me to fill in another form and wait a week for it to be processed and acted on. So here I am: first week back at work, sitting at a dest that's not mine, using a computer that won't play ball, filling in dozens of forms and waiting for some IT guy to press a few buttons so that I can actually do some work.
It's good to be back!
