8110

Let me tell you a tale,
'tis a tale of woe,
'tis the tale of BS 8110.

Standards change every day,
so access on-line is the way,
so my company does say...

(OK, I'll drop the rhymes now!)

SO, I log on to the Bristish Standards site, resigster and then e-mail our highly efficient IS/library department to get them to activate my account so that I can have full access to the forementioned website.

Miss Helpful e-mails Mr BSOnline with the required authorisation code asking that my username is activated. It should be simple...

BUT Miss mostly-Helpful gets a reply saying that my username is not recognised, so e-mails me to say that I have failed to resiger correctly and need to re-register.

Confused, I try to re-resiger, only to get an automatic reply saying that I cannot use that username because it's already registered to someone... that'd be me then. I e-mail Miss trying-to-be-Helpful.

Various e-mails go to and fro until it eventually transpires that Miss getting-less-Helpful miss-spelt my name when she orginally e-mailed Mr BSOnline. This would be slightly annoying if I had, say, telephoned my details through to her, but managing to mess up when she has an e-mail in front of her with my (correctly spelt) name appearing not less than three times in print... well, it was more than 'slightly'... and it was to get worse...

Miss not-so-Helpful said that I'd have to re-register with a different name because "the system" did not allow for an alteraltion of spellings. How hard can it be to send another e-mail to Mr BSOnline?! One thinks that Miss unHelpful was not telling the whole truth...

But I was tired of arguing with stupid people, and in need of access to the elusive 8110, so I re-registered.

Thankfully, this time Miss Efficient picked up my request for account activation, copied my name correctly to Mr BSOnline and two hours later I downloaded the current version of standard I wanted.

Happy ever after?

Of course not, that only happens in fairy tales!
Remember, this is a tale of woe...

but I'll finish it later!
