Taking a look at this edition of Rolling Stone and this NME site, together with this BBC article and you could be forgiven for wondering if we are basically living in the past.
However, listen to the free "Festival" CD you get free with the magazine version of the NME this week and you realise that there is very much life in the present (and it's not just singing about missing out on previous periods in musical / cultural history). Particularly like the title of a couple of the songs the Panic at the Disco track, "The Only Difference Between Martyrdom and Suicide is Press Coverage" and the Fall Out Boy track "Our Lawyer Made Us Change the Name of this Song so We Wouldn't get Sued". Music on the CD doesn't sound too bad either.
