21st century disillusionment

There is a very old joke that says "I used to be apathetic, now I just don't care". Seems like that could be the motto for this century.

I don't think it's true though, I think people do still care and care deeply but perhaps become disillusioned more quickly than in the past because they can't see immeadiate results.

Whatever the causes behind it though it has to be acknowledged that both formal and informal participation in a range of stuff (including direct action) is falling. I guess that is why Schnews this week has one of the most eloquent and well written pieces I've seen in there. Despite how it's described it's not just a "call to arms" for the hippies, ravers, tree huggers, anarchists and crusties, but rather a clear overview of where we are at the beginning of the 21st century.

Will it change anything, probably not. For me what came out most clearly is that what we actually need is for the next wave of activists to emerge; v. probably along with the emergence of another decent musical style.
