Had staff training today and it was ok. We had an interesting ice breaker; had to list a set of rights and wants and decide which one was the most important and which was the least.
Water came out as the most important which was fair enough, but religion came out as the least important right. Now this was something I had to get my head around and decide whether to contest or not. I decided that it all came down to interpretation and definition. I could agree that religion was not important on one level because God is beyond religion and so while you can with hold the right to religion you cannot stop somebody having communion with God and cannot stop them having faith.
That said, it did make me think. The whole question was really beyond my comprehension; I live in a relatively priviledged situation in terms of being in Western Europe where there is basic freedom of expression of religion and so I cannot understand what the consequences of somebody with holding my right to religion would be. As such after todays discussion I think my only guenuine response can be is to pause for a moment, to thank God that I have this freedom of religious expression but also to pray for those, of all religions, around the world who are denied this basic human right.
