Sojourners are highlighting the fact that September 11th is the 5 years and 100 years on from events that changed the world.

The images of September 11th 2001 are embedded in our minds & culture, but equally the images of September 11th 1906 are in their own way embedded in our conciousness and culture - for it was then that M. Gandhi launched his first major non-violent campaign.

So how can we mark this joint day? Well Ghandi's grandson & the Ghandi institute are proposing that it become a day of prayer for peace and harmony. It is an interesting idea and one that I believe should be pursued. Now I acknowledge that the article is advocating a form of universalism that many Christians and others may be uncomfortable with, but I don't believe that it should stop us encouraging each to pray to their own God (or own conception of God) on that day for peace, harmony & co-operation. In praying together for peace, harmony and co-coperation we would be making a statement that our faiths are based on these ideals rather than war, conflict and destruction which is what certain politicians and terrorists would have us believe.
