Today has been wierd for all sorts of reasons. One of these was the fact that I had students getting really excited about "emerging church" type stuff in class today, when we were talking about world affirming NRMs.
I had given them the story of Dream and one student in particular was really taken with it. She started off as I was going through and talking about this type of "church" in a pub/club saying "that's just wrong & I don't know why but it just is" but by the end of it (when I has also been describing Greenbelt ) she was saying "I so want to go to that type of thing" & "I know they'd try to get me interested in Christianity & I probably wouldn't be, but it just sounds so cool". It was interesting that at one point she said "it just seems so sinful" and her non-Christian friend chipped in "but look at Jesus, he went around with anybody and didn't care".
For me it was really difficult as (i) I leave my faith v. much at the door & (ii) I don't know of anywhere locally that has that kind of ministry. I don't think I have ever wanted to share my faith so much with students as I did today (although of course I couldn't), and ever felt so frustrated that there aren't more initiatives going on like this which we could signpost people to.
I had been getting quite cynical about emerging church just being for frustrated Christians until today, but now I really see the potential and just wish there were more initatives going on for people like my student.
