Covenant for a New America is a document that has been put together by Sojourners and Call For Renewal (read put together primarily by the progressive evangelicals) in the US.
It is a document that must be read in its cultural context, but could be a useful base for development of a UK version.
At the moment in this country we are seeing local A&E departments being downgraded or closed and an implicit belief that everybody has a car being built into the health planning of this country, disenfranchisement of large sections of the community through the funding changes within further education, a lack of affordable housing / social housing and people being forced out of their local communities as a result, recruitment freezes and restructuring in many of our public services which in the next 5-10 years when the baby boomers all retire will leave us in a state of crisis and so I could go on. In the mist of all this it is the poor and those on low wages, often juggling a set of part -time jobs who suffer.
So could we have a Covenant for a New England which values these people aswell? (It shouldn't be too hard - afterall in this country we used to have people developing policies and something called the Welfare State on these very principles).
