There is something special about English films, which don't seek to deny difficult subjects yet also don't divert from good acting or a classic plot in an attempt to be sensationalist. The best films tend to make the extraordinary seem particularly ordinary.
A little bit later than the rest of the world I guess, but I have just discovered one of the most recent of these most British gems The History Boys . A story of ambition and repression which also has the purpose of education as a sub-text. It is funny, it is sad, it is beautiful, it is ugly, it simply is.
Therefore, if you have nothing better to do over the bank holiday this is one I would heartily recommend to fill the time with.
