Lisa Riley is My Hero

I'm not really a Strictly fan tending to have a book out or be messing about in the kitchen whilst it's on. I have watched enough over the last few series to know that there tends to be a split between those who are put in there who are pretty much set up to be the comedy element and the serious dancers.  The "comedy" side it appears to me has been based upon setting people up on the basis of stereotypes about size and age. This year it seemed that Lisa Riley  was the fun loving one who was supposed to become the butt of the jokes whilst grabbing the nations heart through crapness. Thing is Lisa effectively stuck two fingers up at this by going in determined to dance well and do her absolute best whilst enjoying it all rather than allowing herself to become the crap comedy element and she was brilliant. Her and her partner danced really well and at the end of the show she and her partner had gained the highest marks off the judges.

In the film prior to her dancing Lisa explained how this was great because whilst she was normally cast as "the minger" this allowed her to glam up and she was determined to enjoy it. I thought this was brilliant because what she has cleverly done is highlight the way that the media treats size and stereotypes it. Her positive attitude towards life as well as to the competition and her intelligence shone out last night. It was brilliant. So much to be learnt from this very positive role model who I hope stays in the competition for the long haul.
