Being patriotic and it being St Georges Day ;) here is a poem about St George that I found on a web site I seem to be linking to far too often now.
By George
His daddy was an Arab
His mum from Palestine
A martyr for his own beliefs
He could be from any time
And the stories that they tell of him
How faith became his shield
When he cut down that dragon
On a far off Libyan field
Were borrowed from the ancient Greeks when Andromeda was saved
From a water dwelling monster by Perseus the brave.
So George became the patron saint of countries far and wide
From Portugal to Georgia
A symbol on the side of good against evil at the time of the crusades
A soldier saint with a lance and shield and a sword with a magic blade
But down in Barcelona
Saint George makes love not war
And maybe that's a message that could heard a whole lot more
And the dragons that need slaying
Are inequality and greed
And mothers and children dying
When there isn't any need
And the spilling of blood for oil where Saint George died long ago
There's a time
And maybe this is it
To let old soldiers go.
