If there were a soundtrack for my undergraduate days it would be supplied by going into the archives of when Jo Whiley and Steve Lamacq were together on the BBC Radio One Evening Session. I can still remember the buzz I got hearing Supergrass's Caught By The Fuzz for the first time. That song is and remains my favourite of the Britpop era and one of my all time favourites. Supergrass were just one of the groups who Steve and Jo got me into back then.
Fast forward 20 years and I'm still discovering new music through these two. Over the last few weeks Jo Whiley has introduced me to the music of Lianne La Havas, who did a live session for her BBC Radio Two show last week. Similarly Steve Lamacq continues to introduce us to a range of new music BBC Six Music.
So it was that I was really pleased to discover the other day that Steve Lamacq had won the Best Radio Show at the Music Week News Awards. Reading through his acceptance speech made me smile loads for a whole range of reasons. Firstly within it he likens the whole experience to Colchester United, his team, being on the steps of Wembley. Now I know abit about Colchester United and their supporters; I come from the town next door and have worked in the same offices as some of them in a previous age. Secondly, as he acknowledges it takes a team to produce a show and part of that team includes his producer who I remember as a little person, hiding behind the sofa, ready to be sent to bed when our youth group invaded his parents house on a Sunday evening. It's cool to see the Suffolk/ North Essex collective get the recognition they deserve. Finally it's great to see the show getting the recognition because in an X factor age, where the NME has effectively turned into a nostalgia mag, the public service these shows and Lamacq's especially provides is opening you up to hearing new music you might not otherwise get to hear/ know about.
