More cynicism

There are a few minutes
with nothing to do.
Nothing decent on tv
and nobody about to talk to.
The e-mails have been checked
the cat has been fed
and the child has been packed off
to a friends to play.
As the kettle goes on
the eyes catch a glimpse
of a book on the table
you've been meaning to read.
It gets picked up
and you start to remember
the times when it's had something to say.
Then your conscience pricked
and your kettle boiled
you realise you have
10 minutes spare.
So you sit and mumble
into the air
a list of frustrations;
wants not needs.
You may add in
a thank you or two
just because
that's the formular
you know you work to.
Then after you've finished your list
you look at the clock
and realise it's time to move.
No stillness or listening;
no wrestling or thinking -
just a faint hope
of instant gratification.
As you get up
and turn on the tv
to watch that soap
you couldn't miss.

And we call this prayer???
