Asking the Awkward Questions

Rowan's asking them in the Radio Times, Adam's asking them in Rev, Father Nathan's been asking them in Pensacola, And Occupiers have been asking them all over.   The thing is these awkward questions have no easy answer; No magical solution or wand to wave; No quick fix answer to give us security When the world we knew is quickly fading.   That's why the New Right ideology, So dangerous and alluring Can appeal with it's scapegoating of the poor And romanticised picture of Victorian morality.   I sit here at the end of 2011; On the cusp of 2012 and sigh At the gap emerging in our societies And the culture of fear and control being created.   The theory was always just theory A scary, vile possibility But now I see it unfolding before me And I shudder as I offer no solutions But am one of those just continuing To ask the awkward questions.   The policies we are seeing implemented in our land Are not some new and original solution Thought up on whim or in an inspired moment These are a vision of the world Gove, Cameron, Osborne and Co have believed in and have studied...disciples all of Murray.   Even the language Cameron has used When speaking of us being a Christian country Has the themes of the New Right running through Linking morality to faith and in turn to nationalism In this neo-Victorian vision of the role of faith.   My faith asks awkward questions About the way previous generations Oppressed people and culture Taking land as they told others To close their eyes and pray.   My faith asks awkward questions About the morality involved in setting our children up With £27,000 debt from uni fees.   My faith asks awkward questions About why we can support the development Of weapons never to be used When libraries, care homes and such like Face the sharp edge of the axe.   My faith asks awkard questions But it needs to start finding answers Together, we whatever percentage we are, Need to come together and search our bibles, Look at the good and bad from the histories of our traditions, Use our reason And reflect on our experiences - shared and individual To offer some alternatives Outside the failing structures if necessary, But also within them That will act as an alternative To this New Right nightmare.
