One of the status updates regarding yesterdays meeting from somebody who was there and has been heavily involved in the campaignsays the following:
" hey everyone, there were a lot of things discussed in tonights meeting (typing up minutes tomorrow!) but one major item that affects everything is the amount of people actually occupying at any given time.
I see this group has 473 members at present. If everyone occupied for one day a week, that'd be 67 people a day. [refers to the Occupy Newcastle FB group]
Not everyone can do a whole 24hrs, or even a full day/night. But even a hour or two makes a difference. Artists (posters!), cooks, anyone who has any practical support they can offer even if not comfortable engaging with the public. Everyone can use their skills if we all chip in.
I feel guilty being away from Monument for a few days - but have given it my all and have to do uni work now - but I am not the only one giving this everything I can and feeling somewhat burnt out.
There has been much talk of defending the camp so let's make sure we've got something worth defending - we are protesting, and some people walk past and it's not even clear why we're there (this is from numerous comments btw!)
In addition, messages of solidarity etc are encouraging, but for those attacked last night, many of whom give up all their free time (and sleep) to occupy, a physical presence would have been more useful. Again, even something like cooking a meal for occupiers can mean someone is freed up for other things!
Numbers in the daytime matter just as much as at night - then the 'night shift' can sleep, and of course there are far more people around to engage with and spread our message - (imo) the top priority!
So, get making banners/posters, cook up something nice, drop by to help fill up water/clean area, spend an afternoon at Monument, spread the word elsewhere, whatever it is - DO IT! Everything is appreciated.
If we work together, we will suceed.
With love and thanks to those who defended the camp last night.
xx"
Think this says it all.
