So according to this NME story the Campbell Diaries reveal that Blair was worried Noel Gallagher would trash No 10. Well carrying on the theme of gigs of my youth I have to say that it is no surprise that he didn't. I saw Oasis in September 1997 @ Exeter Westpoint Arena and I have to say that gig was the most underwhelming and boring I've ever been to.
I don't know if it was the effort to get tickets, or because at that point they were simply the biggest band in the country but the expectation around the gig was huge. I'd travelled down from Tractor Land to Exeter to see them and spent a good few hours queuing to get in before the gig even started and so I wanted value for money. However, despite Travis playing a cracking support and Oasis having a visually stunning stage set the main event was awful. They were boring.
Now at this point I have to be honest there were a couple of ickle factors which might have meant they weren't quite as bad as I remember (although I'm not convinced). Firstly, in the queue to get in my friend and I had got chatting to some rather dodgy blokes next to us, who gave us some of their White Lightening. Secondly I was daft enough to try and get to the front. The result of this mix was, almost inevitably, I got dragged out of the pit by security after almost passing out and so had to nip off to the first aid section for a few minutes to get checked over and rehydrated.
All that said Oasis were one of the best bands of the mid 90's. Recommendation wise it has to be Definately Maybe . In my humble opinion nothing they have or will make can top their first album. My favourite track from it was, is and probably ever shall be "Married With Children".
