At the moment I am desperately chasing an end of the month deadline for submission - and yes I know that means I should probably not be on here, but it is helping me take breaks and keep sane. It's a process I am finding hard because in many ways I moved on from "academia" if I ever thought I was entering it a long time ago. My heart was, is and will probably remain to be a practitioner, however I know that I need the qualification to have recognition and some form of currency that I know what I'm talking about.
In this post Ben Edson has referred to the way that the academic nature of the conversation in the emerging church is sometimes used as a tool for power. That's not just true within this circle, although it is increasingly evidenced by it. Whilst I have no desire to be part of this bubble as such I do want my insights about ecclessiology (church) and single parent families to be taken seriously - therefore getting the MLitt matters. He also mentions the way that women tend to work for the organisation. I think this is tied in to the same thing of being heard too. The only way it seems people are taken seriously is if they are part of the institution or the accademy. Note here that is not why I am going through the candidating process - I feel a genuine call to diaconal ministry.
We need to find a way of hearing people who haven't been through the gatekeepers and taking them equally seriously.
