The fire damaged stock
The queues in the housing office
The nightmares of children
The tears of parents
They each represent a picture of dispair
A question mark etched large
About where it all went wrong
How we got this broken generation
And where is our hope for the future.
The social networking sites
And BBM messenger are blamed
Together with single parents
And liberal ideologies which gave children rights
Without teaching them the responsibilities.
These things are there
Sad signs
Of a broken generation
Looking for hope for the future
Hurting and bored
Thinking that they have the right
To get it any way they can
And give away the blame
Without taking responsibility.
We berate them and blame them
But we must take our part
In being responsible for raising a broken generation
Who need hope for the future.
We who support the capitalist system
Based on consumerism and wanting / needing
The trainers and trackies.
Oh we may shop at Waitrose not Aldi
And get our clothes at Halls and Curtis rather than JJB
But the principle is the same
We have created the values of a broken generation
Who need hope for the future
Yet over the walls
And on the screens
There has been a different story
Written by the same generation
A story of hope and pride
Youths starting groups saying don't riot here!
And posts from young Muslim women telling their friends
About how them and the Sikhs
Have been guarding each other in prayer.
The hope in the present
Was on FB this week.
This is not simply a broken generation
They give hope for our future.
