Touching the Robe

Touching the robe

It's a risk to approach

An act of desperation

Signifing they can do their worst

For her offensive presence.

She has felt their oppression

In her lonliness and fear

They can hurt her no more

The pain - psychological and physical -  runs too deep.

He signifies hope though,

A last dash for freedom

Before accepting her place

As an outcast in society

He is not concerned with legalism

But with love and mercy.

She reaches his robe

And in the touch of the hem

Finds love and healing

A sense of completeness

Lost too many years before.

She can take her place again

As a full member of the group.

Yet she'll never quite lose

The feelings of those years

Lost simply because of who she was

Who she became.

The challenge he gave

When she touched the hem

Was how to use her wholeness

To help others

The excluded community she'd been part of

For too many years.
