If you are UK based and have a spare day in the next 6 days I'd encourage you to go on BBCÂ i-player and watch Mark Lawson talks to Tracey Emin. It's an interesting and articulate interview which explains lots of different things. She explains the sexual activity amongst younger people and that many of them are intelligent young people who are lacking in education, etc. She explains, briefly, about the lack of support she feels women who have abortions have and of course she talks about art. About three quarters of the way she also makes some profound comment about art now being a way of expressing the needs people have spiritually.
I know I am a huge fan of Emin, but this is not being recommended simply on that basis. Rather, I am recommending it as a way of understanding people and art in this country more. It's also interesting as an exercise in seeing a middle class guy not quite getting his head around the topics he's interviewing about when he is referring to her teenage sexual encounters and positive relationships with her parents. The middle class assumptions about life are very telling and the way Tracey has to lay it down as it actually is for young people in places like Thanet is refreshing.
