Chocolate and Wine For the Soul

Yesterday evening after getting back from a FX Vision Day I had had enough. Enough of the theorising about the church and how to do it differently, enough of rushing about like a blue arse fly and enough of feeling like that. In short I arrived back home shattered, having gone to my office to pick up my laptop with the intention of spending the evening doing some more work.

Then I happened upon the blog of one of the speakers yesterday, a guy called Graham. His post included a poem fromWilliam Martin called Rest. Graham had got it from a guy who apparently doesn't blog anymore called Dave Keegan.

“If you fill your calendar with important appointments
you will have no time for God

If you fill your spare time with essential reading
You will starve your soul.

If you fill your mind with worry about budgets and offerings
the pains in your chest and the ache in your shoulders will betray you.

If you try to conform to the expectations ofthose around you
You will be forever their slave

Work a modest day, then step back and rest.
This will keep you close to God’.

(William Martin ‘Rest’)

I decided to take the evening resting and managed to finish reading From Notting Hill with Love Actually by Ali McNamara which was one of Third Party's books I'd picked up to start reading last weekend. I finished that  last night instead of any of the things I should have been doing and you know what it really did feel like Chocolate and Wine for the Soul. It is so rare that I get to read fiction these days, and normally if I do it is on a train from a to b. Last night with Third Party away I just curled up in bed and read....to me this was the height of decandent luxury but was just what I needed. I loved it.

As for the book, well it is a complete no brainer for those who love Chick Flicks. Cultural references form the centre of this modern love story. Completely mindless, completely brilliant for turning off and enjoying. As I said before Chocolate and Wine for the soul.
