Listening to the Missionary Man

I read the news today,

Which didn't mention the potholes

In Blackburn, Lancashire.

It focused on a missionary man,

who wants to take a broken society

And make it whole again.

I listened to the statement of belief.

Murray's underclass theory summed up

In a two minute soundbite

Taylored to the sensitivities

Of all reasonable Englishmen,

Whose vision he wants to embody.

This missionary man wants to

Mend broken families

And allow you to buy the village pub

To mend your broken community.

He wants to cut the red tape

And lead you to freedom.

This missionary man

Has come into town

Stealing our language

To sell you his god.

He wants your investment

To succeed in his plan.

The critics they'll cry it's all a deception

So the axe can be weilded.

But they're missing the substance and zeal

Of what the missionary man

Has bought into town

With his words to inspire.

Let me start with the family,

That agent of primary socialisation

Which teaches us how to think and behave.

The missionary man, he says that it's broken

And as a result

The kids aren't alright.

I want to agree;

I believe in the family

And think that divorce

Is an unpleasant affair.

But equally I know it's not that simple,

As one who's found themselves there.

I've read the statistics,

That I've seen the missionary man use

And I recognise the way

The New Right twist and abuse

The words and the numbers

To stigmatise people like me and like you.

To sweeten the pill

And make it all fair

The missionary man

Wants to show that he cares

For Adam and Steve

As much as Adam and Eve.

But equality is only good for the few,

Who happen to have the right IQ.

The missionary man preaches a gospel

Of meritocracy and hard work,

But in this equal world

The less intelligent have to settle for less.

The missionary man

Wants you down on your knees

Whilst he and his friends

Lay hands on your collar.

They want to bestow the effects of charity,

Paternalism and muscular liberalism.

He wants you to work hard for nothing,

So you can become one of the deserving poor

Whilst he and his ilk deny a living wage.

Now don't get me wrong

I support volunteering

Just not when it's denying a man his daily living.

The language of the missionary man

Is, as you have noticed

A tad patriarchal.

Not suprising as in part he blames

Feminists for causing the debarcle

Which he wants to free us from.

So what is this freedom?

Where is the promised land

The missionary man is proclaiming?

It's where the streets have no name

And time is suspended

Creating a land of fantasy.

The missionary man wants to lead

His people into Never Land;

A fantasy creation of yesteryear.

So excuse my cynicism

That the yellow and blue brick road won't lead to Oz

And the missionary man is leading us into hell rather than heaven.
