Today we reached the end of Genesis. A few deaths, a few paranoid brothers and a basically happy ending. What have I learnt from Genesis that was new to me. Um, I'm not sure, but one thing I think I am clearer on is that it is defo not the "nice" set of bible stories we often present it as. It has very flawed characters as heroes. I knew I was disappointed with Abraham in many ways but I equally became so with Joseph. He was an arrogant bastard who ripped of the population for the sake of the state....the choice he gave was, "give everything to Pharoah or die". In terms of the fifth of fruit they had to give as tax I had to laugh, just like the Con-Dem nation he went for 20%.
This morning it was Matthew, don't know the verses and need to get off her computer before Third Party gets home and catches me. It contained within it though a touching, intimate conversation between Peter and Jesus about paying the temple tax. Jesus tells Peter that they better not offend the religious elite on this one even if they feel that they shouldn't be paying it - so anyway he then sends Peter off to catch a fish which will have the right amount for the tax within it. I love the way Jesus occassionally uses his "super-powers" for the benefit of himself and his friends. This was a rare glimpse of friendship and intimacy which the NT doesn't catch soooo often, but when it does you often feel that is in terms of Peter saying, "there was this one time".
It was proverbs today and a fluffy one.
