Yesterday I introduced a group of my students to the concept of Freecycle , (a site that a number of you, unlike me, have actually used), in a lesson we were doing about what is money.
I have to say it was one of the most interesting experiences I have seen in the classroom as this group of students started to get to grips with the whole idea of giving stuff you don't need away rather than binning it. They are a generation who understand green issues more than any other in some ways, but they are also a generation who take materialism and disposability as normal in a way no other generation has aswell. Therefore, they understood could understand why freecycle was a good idea, but they couldn't get their heads around why people weren't selling the stuff on e-bay instead if it was in a reasonable state and they weren't just going to bin it.
What did slightly concern me though, was the way some of them really struggled to see why you'd do it if you weren't automatically and immeadiately going to get something out of it yourself.
