Yesterday I encountered car crash beauty. No I'm not talking about a real, people might be hurt car crash, but the kind of musical car crash which pure punk rock comes from.
The crash I'm talking about involved pissed up Irish folk, punk and american soft rock guitar mangled up together in the Dropkick Murphys Meanest of Times. It's the sort of proper punk album which is increasingly rare with lyrics that leap between the fun, the moving and the disturbing backed by guitar based rocket fuel.
Particularly strong tracks include Vices and Virtues, Famous For Nothing and Loyal To No One. The calibre of the band is summed up on (F)lannigan's Ball which Spider Stacey (The Pogues) and Ronnie Drew (The Dubliners) guest on.
Useless memory this album fueled: Sex Pistols reunion gig 2002. A hyped up bunch of youngsters who were just breaking and went by the name of The Libertines were crap, the Sex Pistols set was a brilliant cheesey middle aged kareoke fest and it was left to the Drop Kick Murphys to be the only band at Chrystal Palace that day who were playing real punk rock.
