Exploding the myth of (post) modernity

I am late or post modern,

Depending on your definition

My life extends

Beyond time and space.

I am a cleaner,

I am a student,

I am a teacher,

I am a daughter,

I am a lover,

I am a mother,

I am a volunteer,

I am a preacher -

Well in training,

I am a blogger

I am an organiser

I am a product

Of the pick 'n' mix society.

But hang on

Just one moment

I want to look back

A generation or two

To test this hypothesis

You quote

Which argues my fragmented life

Is a product of my time.

My mother was a daughter,

A mother and a sister,

She was a teacher,

A student,

An activist,

A volunteer,

A reader.....

And so much more besides.

My paternal grandmother,

Was a mother

a housewife,

But also an aunt,

A sister,

A carer,

A volunteer,

A letter writer,

A walker

And in the evenings, sometimes, just for fun

A student aswell.

Perhaps where all these roles collide

We should stop blaming

This current time and place

But rather acknowledge

The diversity of our lives

Is simply being woman

Simply being man

Simply being human.
