If You can Talk You can Sing

One of the postcards I have around my room says: "if you can talk, you can sing". This is one of the most important postcards I have to "motivate me" and make me feel good about myself. The fact is if you were using most people's definitions I can't sing...I'm totally out of tune.

Over the years this has been reinforced in a range of ways and is something I've had to overcome in order to be able to engage with God in corporate worship. Doing the LPT training has bought up the issues I have with "worship" and my inabilities to be musical. The preaching is not the "big deal" for me confidence wise but the worship leading is. I am so far out of my comfort zone it's not funny.

Hymns and songs are central to many corporate worship events and I really struggle with the whole thing, (partly because where I do manage to get in tune I am a low female voice which I have only once heard referred to as existing...therefore I sing the blokes part because it's what I get nearest to).

As I get into the folder I am now starting I am aware I am going to have to face this part of myself full square in the face...it's scary but will be beneficial. This is the sort of thing which comes out of Faith and Worship (the LPT training course as it has stood for the last few years) which doesn't get much attention, yet I believe is important. As we move into a new era in terms of theological education I hope that the system continues to allow for the facing of our own demons through reflective practice and the support of local tutors in some way.
