Ekklesia had this interesting ickle nugget regarding the public's view on the replacement of Trident...half the country oppose it, a quarter of the country don't know and only a quarter support it.

If there were this level of agreement on any other spending cut the case would be cut and dried! However, in the defence spending review the whole question is not being addressed because spending on Trident is apparently being guarenteed and excluded from the discussion. CND have a campaign to write to Liam Fox, the defence secretary on this issue. They also have a briefing paper which explains why this decision will ultimately cost jobs in the defence industry, (and so it can't even be argued on those grounds). Follow the previous link.

Figures come from this wider ComRes poll. Even allowing for margins of error the view of the country is clear. What I find interesting is this shows how after a quarter of a century of low level existence and arguably a lack of clear role CND now has a v. clear role to play again in shaping the defence policy decisions of this country.
