Yesterday I made the "mac" / ordinary person comparison, which a v. lovely person picked me up on as she is a mac user. Recently I have been using similar stereotyping in terms of why I so felt that the discernment of the panel who say no to me becoming a Venture FX pioneer mission person were correct in their decision. All the time I have had this one of the free use cartoons from Dave Walker's Cartoon Blog in my mind....I would be the person with the pad and paper, (ready to go and type it up later).
I know he is relating it to influential emerging church bloggers, but the stereotype somehow, (in my mind atleast), seems to sum up those who fit into the leadership/ running of FX type things or generally things that don't involve having to support the elderly who have long and faithful service aswell as trying to reach out to the young in a way which contemporary and relevant....and I am not one of those people. I am an ordinary person living in a world where we need to acknowledge and support the development of "mixed economy" churches, who work inside and outside of the church buildings rather than simply viewing ourselves as automatically having to jump "inherited" or "emerging". I have a passion within me to reach those on the edges of our churches, and outside where they are to help them connect with God's transforming love but also to support those within the church. That's why I embrace the technology, but in a less specialist way and in conjunction with older more traditional methods. It's also why I acknowledge some people such as my friend are v. much NOT the stereotype I was putting forward, even if they do use a Mac. People like her are v. special people who bridge all the worlds in a magical way and thankfully have been recognised as having these gifts to offer the church, as leaders.
