I have heard conflicting reports of what the Durham Miners' Gala is, tomorrow I get to find out. According to the Durham Times there has been a call for it to be none of the options mentioned in the title, but rather be a rallying cry against the current Tory/ Lib Dem government. Whatever, the day reminds us of the important links between church and politics in working class history and the British Labour movement in a much more convincing way than the current Labour leadership contenders appearance in the Christian Socialist Movement hustings were. The Gala Day speeches, which happen around half twelve tomorrow and come from the man formerly known as Red Ken and Jeremy Corbyn amongst others. These speeches are followed by a service at the Cathedral at 3pm.
Whatever happens, and what ever it means to people, I guess it's probably changed a tad since 1939 when some archieve footage, they've got on the BBC site at the moment was shot.
