I've briefly commented on this before but there is a certain unity which occurs when public transport users find that their services are subject to disruption.
Yesterday, as we waited and waited and saw several trains move from delayed to cancelled and we took turns to find out from blokey behind the desk what was happening this was reinforced. Whilst not wanting to take the whole thing too far there is a certain feeling of oneness (and arguably some element of communitas) that occurs once the delay reaches a certain point.
For a people watcher it's actually quite interesting, to see the way different people react and who starts speaking to whom. It was also interesting to note at what point the school children thought that the delays made it possible for them to legitimately claim they couldn't get to school or panic and phone their parents asking for a lift and the reactions for both sets of people.
